Summary:
- DJI releases its first 360-degree camera with 1-inch sensor and 8K video recording
- Device offers 100 minutes of continuous 8K shooting and 180 minutes total battery life
- Starting price is £409.99 GBP / €479.99 EUR / $549.99 USD
DJI entered the 360-degree camera market today with the Osmo 360, marking the drone manufacturer's first venture into immersive imaging technology.
The Osmo 360 incorporates a 1-inch sensor designed specifically for 360-degree capture. This sensor records 8K video at 50 frames per second. DJI claims this combination represents a first in the 360-degree camera industry.
The sensor's square configuration sets it apart from competitors. DJI states this design provides 25% better sensor utilization compared to traditional rectangular sensors by eliminating unused areas. The company reports this square HDR sensor consumes less power, extending battery performance.
Video recording capabilities include 8K resolution at 30fps for up to 100 minutes of continuous operation. The company positions this as unique among current 360-degree cameras. Higher frame rates reach 100fps when resolution drops to 4K.
Still photography benefits from 2.4μm pixels, double the standard 1.2μm size found in other 360-degree cameras. These larger pixels work with an f/1.9 aperture to improve low-light performance and expand dynamic range to 13.5 stops.
The device weighs 183 grams and includes 105GB of internal storage. Battery life extends to 180 minutes when using the optional Battery Extension Rod accessory.
Operating modes include single-lens functionality that transforms the device into an action camera. This mode delivers 155-degree ultra-wide recording in 5K at 60fps, or 170-degree coverage in 4K at 120fps through Boost Video mode.
Control options include gesture recognition and voice commands. The camera features intelligent subject tracking and allows switching between front and rear lenses during recording without interruption.
The Osmo 360 competes directly with Insta360's X5, which uses a smaller 1/1.28-inch sensor. Market positioning focuses on the larger sensor advantage and extended recording capabilities.
Pricing starts at £409.99 GBP, €479.99 EUR, or $549.99 USD for the Standard Combo configuration. Multiple package options are available through DJI's website beginning today.
The release expands DJI's product portfolio beyond drones and gimbal systems into the consumer 360-degree imaging market. Technical specifications target content creators requiring extended recording times and high-resolution output.
