Jeff Mills emerged from Detroit and became one of techno's central figures as a DJ, producer, composer and label founder. He co-founded Underground Resistance, and his track The Bells is a techno classic. Mills has performed with symphony orchestras, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and shows his work in exhibitions. France named him a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2007 and promoted him to Officer in 2017.
Audio Obscura is a Dutch organisation founded in 2013. The team places electronic music in locations usually closed to club promoters, among them the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam Central Station and the Rijksmuseum bicycle passage. On 21 June 2025, Audio Obscura staged the Highway Rave on the A10 motorway as part of Amsterdam's 750th anniversary.
Audio Obscura asked Mills one question: what lies beyond the frame of De Nachtwacht? Mills studied Rembrandt's painting and answered with a film made at the Rijksmuseum. The public sees the result for the first time during Amsterdam Dance Event, which celebrates its 30th anniversary from 21 to 25 October 2026.
The film follows a path through the Gallery of Honour toward the canvas. The performance runs in three parts. Mills starts behind the decks. Dancer Sophie Boursier then steps in front of the painting. Mills returns for a live finish, and when the music stops, only Rembrandt's work stays on screen.
Director Hans Pannecoucke moves the camera toward De Nachtwacht and away again several times. The scene looks different on each return. Boursier's movement stays tied to the painting's position in the frame, so she reads as a figure from Mills' imagined world who walked into the gallery.
Mills built his response around the arrival of Marie de' Medici. He says her role as a patron of the arts shaped both his music and Boursier's choreography. Audio Obscura describes the film as an imagined response and not a historical account of the scene Rembrandt painted.
Jeroen Fontein, co-founder and managing director of Audio Obscura, says the team did not ask Mills for a DJ set with the painting behind him. The team asked him to study the work and answer as an artist. Fontein says Mills built a full world around the painting, from the music and dance to the way viewers approach the canvas.
