OTW by Vans and Satoshi Nakamoto release the Era 95 Gems on Friday, October 16. Vans sells the pair only through its OTW webstore at vans.com/otw.
The two partners have worked together before, and the Era 95 continues the experimental, subversive design approach they share. Both designed the pair in collaboration. Vans describes the shoe as a raw, dystopian version of the Era, a silhouette the brand first released in 1976. Wear and imperfection sit at the center of the design, and the construction and materials follow this idea on purpose.
The upper uses navy canvas built to tear away. As you wear the pair, the top layer erodes and shows a classic checkerboard underlay beneath. Exposed foam lines the collar and gives the shoe a deconstructed finish. Round multicolor gemstones sit along the ankle collar and add precision and contrast next to the rough foam.
A printed lace repeats the word “Satoshi” and carries sandblasted bead detailing, which adds texture. Combined with the gemstones and the tearaway canvas, these parts give the shoe a hand-altered look.
Below the upper, the vulcanized sidewalls have a hand-wiped black and yellow patina. This treatment gives the rubber an aged appearance, and a distressed foxing stripe runs next to the patina. The outsole is translucent crystal. “Satoshi Nakamoto” appears through the sole, a hidden detail designed to surface as you move.
Because the upper is designed to wear away, your pair looks different as you use the shoe. The checkerboard underlay becomes more visible as the canvas erodes, and Vans treats this change as part of the design.
The OTW by Vans x Satoshi Nakamoto Era 95 Gems goes on sale Friday, October 16.
