The annual LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize has revealed its 30 finalists for 2025, selecting from a record number of 4,500 submissions worldwide. The finalists represent 18 countries, showcasing works that range from ceramics and metalwork to textile art and experimental materials.
The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid will host the exhibition from May 30 to June 29, 2025. Located in the museum's historic galleries, the show will place contemporary craft in dialogue with classical artworks from the permanent collection.
A jury comprising 13 experts from the fields of design, architecture, journalism, criticism, and museum curation will select the winner. The chosen artist will receive €50,000 during the opening ceremony on May 29.
The prize, established in 2016 by LOEWE's creative director Jonathan Anderson, connects the fashion house's origins as a leather goods workshop in Madrid to its current role in contemporary design. Previous winners include Mexican ceramic artist Andrés Anza, whose 2024 winning piece "I only know what I have seen" (2023) featured a towering, spiked column that explored themes of memory and perception.
Foundation president Sheila Loewe noted how the prize has influenced careers and perceptions of craft over its existence. "The award continues my family's commitment to supporting craftspeople who push the boundaries of their materials while maintaining technical excellence," she said.
The shortlisted works demonstrate the evolving nature of contemporary craft, with artists incorporating both traditional techniques and experimental approaches. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog documenting each finalist's creative process and technical innovations.
This tenth edition of the prize coincides with Madrid's spring cultural season, adding to the city's roster of international art events. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum expects increased visitor numbers during the exhibition period, particularly from the design and collecting communities.
