lululemon launches Silent Type, its first outerwear collection made with GORE-TEX, as an exclusive for BEAMS in Japan. Pre-sales start on Friday 13 November at three BEAMS stores in Tokyo, and the collection reaches six more BEAMS locations on Thursday 3 December. It covers a rain jacket, a raincoat and a waterproof down jacket, each in men's and women's versions, priced from ¥68,800 (about €390) to ¥128,800 (about €735).
What makes the lululemon Silent Type collection quiet
High-performance shells tend to feel stiff and make a rustling sound with every movement. Silent Type is designed to keep GORE-TEX protection while reducing both.
The pieces use the latest GORE-TEX ePE membrane, made from expanded polyethylene, which is waterproof, windproof and breathable. The outer fabric is a proprietary material developed to cut friction noise, and the lining is a brushed tricot. Together they give the jackets a soft hand and make them unusually quiet to wear.
The three models
The lineup is built on three models, for a total of six pieces across men's and women's styles:
- Rain jacket, ¥68,800 (about €390)
- Raincoat, ¥92,800 (about €530)
- Waterproof down jacket, ¥128,800 (about €735)
The rain jacket and the raincoat have a three-layer construction with fully sealed seams and several pockets. The waterproof down jacket uses a two-layer structure filled with 700-fill-power goose down certified under the Responsible Down Standard, designed to stay light while keeping the wearer warm down to -20°C.
All three share a minimal design meant to work in the city as much as in bad weather, and a relaxed fit that leaves room for layering underneath.
lululemon, GORE-TEX and BEAMS
The Vancouver brand is best known for training and yoga clothing, but it has been building up its outerwear in recent seasons with down lines such as Featherweight and Wunder Puff. Silent Type is the first time lululemon has worked with GORE-TEX.
The choice of BEAMS as the only retailer puts the collection inside one of Japan's main specialty stores, which has a long history with technical outerwear, including a 25-year partnership with Arc'teryx celebrated this autumn with the KOYO collection.
Launch party and gift with purchase
A launch party takes place at BEAMS MEN Shibuya on Thursday 12 November, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It is free and open to the public, with a DJ, food and drinks.
At every store, the first 30 customers who buy an eligible item receive a limited-edition Back to Life Sports Bottle designed for the collection, while supplies last.
