- Muller Van Severen relaunches Pillow Sofa with KASSL Editions and BD Barcelona in glossy black lacquer cotton
- Original design from 2021 featured bag-inspired cushions connected to steel frame with fabric bands
- New version simplifies assembly while maintaining the same visual design elements
Belgian design studio Muller Van Severen brings back their Pillow Sofa through a three-way collaboration with KASSL Editions and BD Barcelona. The furniture piece now comes in glossy black lacquer cotton.
The Pillow Sofa first appeared in 2021. Designers Fien Muller and Hannes van Severen based the concept on KASSL Editions' Pillow Bag. The sofa translates the bag's puffy structure into furniture form.
The design uses individual cushions attached to a steel frame through fabric-covered bands. This construction method creates the bag-like appearance that defines the piece.
KASSL Editions co-founder Ilse Cornelissens called the original design "a symbol of the intersection between fashion and design." The collaboration merged handbag aesthetics with seating furniture.
BD Barcelona first produced the Pillow Sofa in six fabric options. These included leather, velvet, canvas, cotton, lacquer cotton, and corduroy. Each fabric came in bright colors.
The new glossy black version uses lacquer cotton fabric. This material creates a reflective surface that changes appearance based on lighting conditions.
"We've always been drawn to shine; the reflecting surface brings the piece to life", said Fien Muller and Hannes van Severen. "Every fabric gives the Pillow Sofa its own unique character."
The designers describe the glossy lacquer cotton as "bold and elegant" with "personality". They position this version as particularly sophisticated compared to previous options.
The new model keeps the same visual design as the original. However, the assembly process has been simplified for easier installation. The steel frame structure and fabric band connections remain unchanged.
The glossy black Pillow Sofa becomes available on kassleditions.com starting August 21. Pricing information was not disclosed in the announcement.
This release represents the latest evolution of a design that bridges fashion accessories and home furniture. The collaboration continues the relationship between the three companies that began with the original 2021 launch.
