Miista spent a day treading grapes in Alsace in early September. The team travelled from Paris to Pépin Winemakers with a small group of creatives and made wine among the vines.
Pépin Winemakers is a collective of vineyards and estates in Alsace with a focus on natural wine and organic agriculture. The collective's mission is to democratise natural wine and make the product approachable and easy to drink. Miista says this approach sits close to the way the team makes things differently.
The visit came as the season moved from summer to autumn and a new harvest was close to becoming wine. Grapes were plentiful. Everyone took off their shoes and trod them. The group drank wine while spending time in the vineyard. Evgenia juggled with the grapes, and Miista describes the act as a fitting example of doing "The Opposite Thing" with raw materials.
Miista frames the day around the time making takes. The team follows a seasonal cycle with a distinct rhythm, which leaves room to experiment and develop designs. Some pieces take months and others take years before the team finds the right blend. Miista says natural winemaking takes time too and links grape treading to artisanal tradition, where individual character matters more than standardised perfection.
The grapes the group helped tread will spend the next year becoming wine. Once the wine is ready, Miista will bring everyone back together in Paris for an evening to drink what they helped make.
Nine people feature in the project: Evgenia Nirka, Enantios Dromos, Rosario Bohio, Drielly Oliveira, Sam Quealy, Sophie Dherbecourt, Maria Bernad, Nikita Vlassenko and Stas Kalashnikov. Fausto Elizalde handled photography. Artem Sadovnikov handled video, with Vlad Malyshev as assistant and Andrea Alonso as editor. Manon Dubourdeaux worked on movement and Eugène Berkovski on lighting. Alice Dodds did makeup with Jean Déchaux assisting. Alexander Van Der Heide did hair with Pol Guame Ayuso assisting.
