- Their professional collaboration began in the 1990s and has included advertising campaigns, luxury brand partnerships, and shared aesthetic influences
The Venice Film Festival will screen Sofia Coppola's documentary debut when the event runs from August 27 to September 6. Her film Marc by Sofia examines the career of fashion designer Marc Jacobs through the lens of their long-standing friendship.
The documentary runs 97 minutes and will be shown outside the main competition program. Coppola selected the title as a reference to Marc by Marc Jacobs, the designer's now-discontinued diffusion line that operated from 2001 to 2015.
The film incorporates archival material to chronicle Jacobs' development within the fashion industry. It also explores the creative connection between Coppola and Jacobs, which has persisted since their first meeting in 1992.
Their initial encounter occurred after Jacobs presented his grunge-inspired collection for Perry Ellis, a presentation that divided industry observers. In a 2015 interview, Jacobs described their meeting: "Sofia was one of the few who recognized something special and related to what I was doing at that time. She wanted to meet me, and when we did, it was love at first sight for me!"
The relationship has produced several collaborative projects over the years. Jacobs featured Coppola in his early advertising campaigns before she became an established director. During his tenure as creative director at Louis Vuitton from 1997 to 2014, the two worked together on various initiatives.
More recently, Coppola's film The Virgin Suicides served as inspiration for Heaven, Jacobs' contemporary streetwear label launched in 2020. The brand draws from youth culture and subcultural aesthetics, themes that appear throughout Coppola's filmography.
Marc by Sofia joins other films selected for Venice's 82nd edition. The festival has not released additional details about the documentary's distribution plans or subsequent screenings.
